Honoring Our Founder:

Dr. Norman Camp

New Paragraph

A Visionary, Advocate, and Champion for Environmental Justice

Dr. Norman Camp was more than just a founder—he was the heart and guiding force behind the vision that became Partners for Environmental Justice (PEJ). A man of profound integrity, compassion, and courage, Dr. Camp dedicated his life to improving the lives of others through service, advocacy, and action. He believed in the power of community and the right of all people to live in healthy, safe, and thriving environments.

Born in Tuskegee, Alabama, and shaped by the historic civil rights and environmental movements, Dr. Camp brought his passion for equity and stewardship to Raleigh, North Carolina, where he left an indelible mark. A graduate of Meharry Medical College, Dr. Camp was not only a respected physician but also a devoted public servant. He served as the medical director for Wake County’s Health Department and was instrumental in identifying and responding to the public health impacts of environmental hazards in underserved neighborhoods.

A Legacy Rooted in Action

Education & Empowerment

Dr. Camp's tireless efforts to clean up and revitalize the Walnut Creek Wetland area laid the foundation for PEJ's mission. What others saw as a neglected swamp, he saw as a vital ecosystem and a space of untapped community potential. His work helped lead to the development of the Walnut Creek Wetland Center, an enduring symbol of environmental restoration and civic partnership.

Through PEJ, Dr. Camp brought together residents, students, policymakers, and faith leaders to advance environmental justice in Southeast Raleigh. He believed environmental health was inseparable from community health and that change came through collective voice and action.

Remembering Dr. Camp

Dr. Norman Camp passed away in 2016, but his spirit lives on in every initiative we take, every child we educate, and every wetland we restore. His leadership continues to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards and social justice advocates.

We honor Dr. Camp not just with this page, but with our daily work. PEJ remains committed to the values he lived by: equity, collaboration, empowerment, and stewardship.

“We must be the guardians of our environment. Our health, our future—our justice—depends on it.”
— Dr. Norman Camp
